I have just got back from doing a 7 week project in Ethiopia in collaboration with Ethiopian dancer and choreographer Addisu Demissie also artistic director of Adugna Dance Company in the capital city Addis Ababa. The experience was unforgettable, insightful and very inspiring. It all started a year and half ago when I met Addisu in Cardiff during a short project with Valley and Vale Arts. We stayed in contact and a year and a half later I found myself in Addis Ababa collaborating on a new work entitled Addis Interactions. I met the company took class, taught class, got involved, made friends and was immersed into a new life there. I even found myself dancing with the company for a famous pop star. Scroll down to see a extract of the work we created.

I was inspired by the people, the colours and sounds of Addis Ababa. It was intoxicating and such a rich experience. Addisu and I worked on getting to know each other’s way of moving and spent many hours improvising together. We were lucky to find that the way we worked and moved complimented each other, this meant we could start to create with ease. The project was a success, we performed the work on the 7th of March at Alliance Francais with a great audience. Collaborating together was very interesting and natural, we found a connection which will grow and develop in the future. This it not the end for Addis Interactions we will be bringing the work to the UK and developing it further later this year.
